What happens at pickup
The carrier should call about 24 hours ahead to give you a time. If you have not heard from them, it is fine to call and ask.
When the driver arrives, they inspect the car. This is your moment to take photos, ideally with the carrier's truck in frame, so there is no question about the car's condition at handoff.
After the inspection the driver hands you the bill of lading (BOL). Check that every detail is correct, including any damage marked on the diagram. If they have marked something, ask them to show you. Once you are satisfied, sign it, hand over the key, and the car is in the carrier's possession. They load it, strap it down, and go.
What the bill of lading is
The BOL is the legal document for the shipment. It lists the vehicle, the pickup and delivery addresses, and the condition of the car, and it serves as the contract between you and the carrier. Everyone who signs it must be 18 or older. It is also your evidence if you need to make a damage claim at delivery, so keep your copy.
